ReoSpace
Kia hihiko, kōrero, kia toitū | Ignite, kōrero, sustain
ReoSpace, he aha tenei? | What is ReoSpace?
Te Tumu Herenga | Libraries and Learning Services hosts ReoSpace to ignite, kōrero, and sustain our reo rangatira (chiefly language) in a safe, welcoming, inclusive space, where te reo is centred as the primary language of communication.
The concept of ReoSpace was gifted to Te Tumu Herenga by its architect, Kewana Duncan, an alumni of our Te Wānanga Reo Rūmaki movement, which was also hosted at the University of Auckland in the 1990s. ReoSpace as a concept acknowledges that in the revitalisation of te reo, we have places to learn te reo, but until now, few dedicated places to kōrero te reo.
ReoSpace supports the University’s Language Plan for the Revitalisation of Te Reo Māori 2020-2025 and the nationwide Maihi Karauna – the Crown’s Strategy for Māori Language Revitalisation.
Mā wai a ReoSpace? | Who can use ReoSpace?
ReoSpace is open to all kaimahi (staff), tauira (students), and manuhiri (guests/visitors) from outside of Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.
You can be an absolute beginner through to a fluent speaker. ReoSpace uses four manu, or bird icons, developed by Waipapa Taumata Rau to illustrate the te reo journey - the Kiwi (beginner), Pīwaiwaka (casual), Tūī (conversational) and Kāhu (fluent). We invite you to use your own dialect and we look forward to the diversity of dialects being spoken.
He aha ngā mahi ki ReoSpace i a wiki? | What kind of activities will be held in ReoSpace?
Special events are planned for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Mahuru Māori, and other significant times during the Maramataka Māori, alongside the ReoSpace Kaiāwhina lunch sessions from 12-2pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during semesters.
We encourage participants learning te reo at Waipapa Taumata Rau and in the community to hold their events, prize-giving, and other activities that generate the use of te reo at ReoSpace.
