Pacific arts prize launched at University of Auckland

Elam School Master of Fine Arts student Benjamin Work, is the inaugural recipient of the Fatu Feu’u Pacific Arts Prize from Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

The award was established by historian Dr Felicity Barnes from the University and Michael Whitehead. Named after renowned Sāmoan artist Fatu Feu’u ONZM, a Distinguished Alumni of the University, it honours his work and leadership in the arts community. Feu’u was a guest of honour at the launch of the award on 21 August 2024 at the Fale Pasifika.

Set up to be offered over the next ten years, the arts award rewards excellence in creative practice for Pacific students, and is also designed to support students at postgraduate level with a $15,000 prize.  

Rare and precious keys to a musical career

A salon-style recital where music students compete for the generous Anna Nathan Prize in Early Keyboard Music is an annual highlight for students and staff at the University of Auckland.

The venue, Viela in Karangahape Road, kindly loaned by School of Music alumnus Jack Bourke, was “very stylish, not huge but beautiful, like someone’s elegant drawing room”.

To the top prize-winner, Xavier Manetto-Munro, “it felt a little like a large dinner party, held in an aristocratic home, with pauses for harpsichord pieces and then a return to festivities. The recital was conducted in a way that helped bring the history of the harpsichord alive”.

Psychological thriller wins inaugural Phoenix Prize

A pacy psychological thriller set in contemporary Sydney has won the inaugural Phoenix Prize for its author Rachel Paris, a Master of Creative Writing student from the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Arts.

University of Auckland 140th Anniversary Scholarships

2023 marks the 140th Anniversary of Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

To commemorate this important milestone, two new scholarships are being awarded.

The University of Auckland 140th Anniversary Academic Scholarship recognises excellent academic achievement for secondary school or kura students who applied for one or more of the following Scholarships: the University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship, the University of Auckland Māori Academic Excellence Scholarship, the University of Auckland Pacific Academic Excellence Scholarship, or the University of Auckland Academic Potential Scholarship - School Leavers.

The University of Auckland 140th Anniversary Kupenga Rau Māori and Pacific Scholarship provides financial support to academically-able Māori and Pacific students attending university for the first time who who applied for one or more of the following Scholarships: the University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship, the University of Auckland Māori Academic Excellence Scholarship, the University of Auckland Waka Moana Scholarship, the University of Auckland Vaka Moana Scholarship, the University of Auckland Pacific Academic Excellence Scholarship, or the University of Auckland Academic Potential Scholarship - School Leavers.

Scholarships help science student reach for the stars

Wilco Ng is being supported in his studies by a scholarship established almost 140 years ago – the Gillies Scholarship. Founded in 1884 by Thomas B Gillies, a judge in the Supreme Court of New Zealand, the Gillies Scholarship was established to encourage the study of chemistry and physics and is open to any first-year student enrolling in a Bachelor of Science in the School of Chemical Sciences or Department of Physics.

Wilco is also supported by a Presbyterian Methodist Congregational Grafton Scholarship, which covers the cost of accommodation in a University of Auckland residency hall.

Connection at the heart of law student’s work to empower Māori

Caleb Brothers is currently completing a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts conjoint degree, with a double major in Māori Studies and Employment Relations and Organisation Studies.

He is also the 2023 recipient of the Chapman Tripp Iwi Governance Scholarship in Law.

Rhodes to success: students head to Oxford

Two exceptional University of Auckland students will soon make Oxford their stomping ground as they prepare to embark on postgraduate studies there, thanks to the world's oldest international scholarship programme.

Bachelor of Laws (Hons) student Karan Kalsi and conjoint Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts student Frances Wright will embark on postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford after they were awarded Rhodes scholarships.
