If you have a good academic record in a relevant subject, there are many research opportunities at the Liggins Institute.
How to apply for a Masters or PhD programme
You can apply for a Masters or PhD programme at the Liggins Institute at any time. We welcome applications from recent graduates, people returning to postgraduate study, and practising clinicians.
- Start by contacting one or more of our supervisors to discuss potential research topics. You can find supervisors and their specialities here, or browse the list of current projects. Alternatively, you can speak to our postgraduate adviser, who can refer you to supervisors based on your interests.
- Once the supervisor agrees to work with you and a research project is agreed upon, you can then apply for the Masters or PhD programme by following the step-by-step guides below.
Entry requirements
- Entry requirements for the Masters programmes that can be undertaken at the Liggins Institute:
Master of Biomedical Science
Master of Health Sciences
You should also have a background in these types of subjects:
- biological sciences including molecular medicine, medicine and physiology
- clinical medicine and health sciences including obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, nursing, pharmacology, nutrition and dietetics, and endocrinology
- community health, Pacific health and Māori health
- animal or veterinary science
Important note when making an application
When completing your application, enter ‘Liggins Institute’ as your place of study, and select ‘Grafton’ as the campus. Enter your subject as ‘Perinatal Science’.
Research projects for bachelors and masters programmes
You can also apply for a research project at the Liggins Institute as part of a related honours degree or postgraduate diploma.
Honours projects are completed as a 90 point Research thesis and are a great way to get a taste of research under the supervision of world-renowned investigators.

Honours, diploma and some masters courses where the research component is completed at the Liggins Institute are coordinated through the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (FMHS).
