Questions about gifts in wills
Questions about including the University of Auckland in your will
Is it possible for my will to keep family needs uppermost and still effectively support the University?
Absolutely. Most of our gifts through wills come from modest and caring New Zealanders who look after their family appropriately and then invest in the well-being of others by acknowledging and showing their appreciation for the achievements and contributions of their University in improving and enriching community and country.
How will the University of Auckland use my gift?
It will be used in accordance with your wishes. You may want to specify support for a particular social need you identify with; an outcome that is meaningful to you or people close to you; or a particular academic discipline at the University. This could mean that we create a specific opportunity, such as a scholarship or a research fund. However, it is not necessary to be prescriptive in that way.
We will work with you to ensure your motivation and intended outcomes are translated into workable, enduring instructions that will guide your gift into the future.
We will use your gift carefully and cost effectively so that it has the greatest impact; and give you the opportunity to connect with the work we do during your lifetime.
How do I know that the gift I write into my will now is going to be useful to the University's future needs?
The best way to make sure of this is to talk over your wishes with the University representative who is familiar with options that exist at the University of Auckland and understands how your legacy gift can be documented to reflect what is important to you. The person to talk to is:

What are the main ways that people include the University of Auckland in their will?
There are many ways to include the University in your will. Your will writer is the best person to discuss the options with you. The most frequent types of gifts are:
Giving the residue of your estate, or a part of what remains after your loved ones have received their share.
Giving a percentage or proportion of your estate. This ensures that the University receives the share of your estate that you desire, no matter how much your estate may have increased or decreased since you made your will.
Giving a specific amount or an asset such as shares, a life insurance policy or property.
Can I create an opportunity such as a scholarship that will keep on being awarded year after year?
Yes, where a capital sum can be invested and sufficient interest generated annually for the award to continue 'in perpetuity'. The University of Auckland Foundation or Medical and Health Sciences Foundation can both manage endowments (the name for this type of gift).
