Student device recommendations
Information about what device we recommend to support students' studies at the University and ways that we can support your IT needs.
Personal device
If you're a student who wants to have their own personal device, and ensure it will be capable to perform most of the requirements of teaching activities, we have defined a base-level computer specification recommendation. Students who have personal devices that meet these recommendations will be able to work autonomously for most activities without using University computers, including doing exams online.
This is not a requirement for students, but information to see whether a computer you have, or are thinking of purchasing, will be sufficient.
We recommend:
- Windows 10 or 11, OR MacOS 10.14 or higher
- Intel i5 or Apple M1 processor or equivalent/better
- 16 GB RAM
- 256 GB hard drive
- Web camera and microphone
- A 13” screen or greater
- Minimum 2Mbps internet connection with either cabled internet / 802.11AC or faster WiFi.
University supplied devices
The University has invested significantly in its technology to ensure all students are supported in their studies and academic life. Everything you need to know about IT services and support at the University of Auckland can be found at the Student IT Hub.
Computing facilities available for all students are located on our campuses in faculty computer labs, libraries, and information commons, and are available during extensive opening hours throughout the year. Further information on what's available on all our campuses and our day-use laptops can be found on the Computer facilities web page.
If you need to borrow a laptop or WiFi for an extended period of time, you can apply online and find further information on the Student technology support web page.
