Travel abroad

360 International is the department within the University that looks after learning abroad opportunities, including the outbound semester exchange programme, as well as a wide range of other learning abroad opportunities, from network programmes, short-term programmes, virtual exchanges and University-supported Prime Minister’s Scholarship Programmes in Asia and Latin America.

The 360 International team also manages the travel and insurance registration process for all University students travelling abroad on approved-University student activity

360 International is best known for their semester exchange programme, which provides the opportunity for eligible University of Auckland students to spend one or two semesters abroad, studying at one of over 130 partner institutions, while earning credits towards their current degree.

Unfortunately, not all FMHS programmes are open to exchanges, however there may be other opportunities to engage in global learning through practicums, electives/selectives, conferences, and non-academic programmes offered over the summer.

Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc)

We advise that BHSc students undertake an exchange in the second semester of stage two or in the first semester of stage three, however there is flexibility with this. The core courses should be taken here at Auckland. The Programme Director will work with you to identify courses at your exchange institution that can count towards the elective components of your BHSc and help you plan your exchange.

Bachelor of Science (Biomed) (BSc (Biomed))

Students studying a Bachelor of Science are able to partake in the 360 International exchange programme as part of their degree. It’s advised that students go in their second year, although third year may be possible. Students may credit up to 30 points of stage 3 courses towards their major and must complete at least 45 points upon return to the University of Auckland for their final semester.

Bachelor of Nursing (BNurs)

Due to a change in curriculum, Nursing exchanges are no longer available at our exchange partners (University of Queensland and University of Virginia). As the Nursing exchange programme is currently on hold, any updates will be made available on this page if options become available in the future.

Bachelor of Medical and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)

Due to the specialised nature of this programme, this degree does not have the opportunity to add an exhange semester. Students wishing to travel as part of their study may do so in Year 5 as part of their selective, or Year 6 as part of their independent elective.

Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm)

Because of the professionally oriented structure and nature of our programme that aligns to our Pharmacy Council of New Zealand competence standards, students cannot complete portions of their BPharm degree abroad. It is also not possible to carry out a ‘gap year’ in the BPharm programme.

However, between Part III and Part IV of the BPharm in the summer break, students may be eligible to apply to participate in an optional Overseas Research Placement in partnering universities in Europe and Australia, where available and deemed safe due to national and international health guidance.

Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom)

Due to the specialised nature of this programme,this degree does not have the opportunity to add an exhange semester. Students wishing to travel as part of their study may do so in Part IV if a suitable externship partner is found, however this needs school sign-off and is not part of the 360 International semester exchange programme.
