Newmarket Campus

The 5.2 hectare Newmarket site was previously owned and occupied by Lion Breweries and acquired by the University in 2013 to develop as a long-term mixed-use campus. The Newmarket Campus was a major strategic acquisition for the University providing opportunities for long-term growth close to the City and Grafton campuses. The site is seen as the centre of a developing innovation precinct embracing engineering, science and health technologies. In addition to large scale Engineering and Science research facilities, the campus is also home to more than 20 start-up and growth companies and offers the space to develop purpose-built research, co-location and multiuse amenities to support its innovation mandate.

Newmarket Innovation Precinct (NIP)

The Newmarket Innovation Precinct (NIP) is a multidisciplinary, industry-facing research & development community based at Newmarket Campus. NIP supports the colocation of companies on the Newmarket site and enables them to explore their collaborative intentions with the University. We have a firm commitment to working with companies within the NZ CleanTech, DeepTech and MedTech sectors where the proximity of top student talent, high quality technical capability, specialist facilities and a relevant community of end users, provides an excellent environment to scale. We also provide individual membership to our growing innovation community, well connected to the wider start-up ecosystem in Auckland.

NZ Product Accelerator (NZPA)

The New Zealand Product Accelerator (NZPA) is a national research and technology network founded in 2013 funded by the government. The NZPA collaboration model is driven by Industry and Community needs, and the Network works as a team to develop and/or translate technologies in collaboration with NZ enterprises. The Product Accelerator helps connect industry with research expertise, solving industry problems, building productivity and supporting the transformation of the economy. We have broad capabilities from practical business skills and technology development and application, as well as deep capability in materials and manufacturing areas. UniServices is a not-for-profit company of Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland that transforms research into global impact starting in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We serve as kaihono (linking people to people and people to projects) by bringing together researchers, industry, investors, government agencies, and our communities. We manaaki (nurture), advance, and invest in the ideas and intellectual property that arise from the University by helping translate it into products, services, companies, and community-impact projects.

The vision for the Newmarket Campus sees the site as the centre of a pan-University advanced research and innovation campus, within a wider Grafton/Newmarket Health, infrastructure, and Education precinct. The 5.2 hectare site is key to the University’s integrated three campus model with closely connected inner city sites at City, Grafton and Newmarket supporting the major teaching and research activities, with satellites in South Auckland and Whangarei. Within this model, the Newmarket campus will first and foremost accommodate evolving University needs in teaching, research, and engagement over several decades.

Newmarket is the Auckland base for the internationally renowned QuakeCoRE, the NZ Product Accelerator Network, and Centres in Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Design, Transport, Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Co-Create Aging Research. It will provide the future hub for companies from Medtech IQ Tamaki Makaurau, part of a national Te Titoki Mataora Medtech network.

Consistent with this innovation mandate and the University’s strategy Taumata Teitei, the campus is outward facing, encouraging interaction with its community. It is home to the Newmarket Innovation Precinct (NIP), an expanding group of co-locating companies using facilities and sharing the ambitions of the innovation precinct. The campus will also seek partnership developments with large co-locators where objectives are strategically aligned with those of the University and the wider Auckland innovation strategy and economy. The research and commercialisation activities of leading-edge innovation precincts also attract diverse national and international participation.

An Innovation Centre is also planned for the site housing the administration of the precinct, a commercialization office and a range of meeting and co-location spaces. It will also include cafés and food outlet(s) and provide a key point of intersection with the wider community.
