Application
Staff members on the senior tutor grade at the University
Purpose
The policy and procedures for transferring from senior tutor grade to lecturer/senior lecturer/professional teaching fellow grade
Policy
Transfer from senior tutor to lecturer/senior lecturer
1. A transfer from senior tutor to lecturer/senior lecturer is an appointment process
2. The dean is to consider whether a transfer is in the interests of the University
3. The dean will then consider whether a transfer is also in the interest of the staff member
4. The dean must consider whether the applicant would be appointed to a lecturer/senior lecturer position had one been advertised
Transfer from senior tutor to professional teaching fellow (PTF)
5. A transfer to a professional teaching fellow position is not to be treated as an appointment process
6. If the appropriate level on the PTF scale is lower than the current salary then the University is to protect the current base salary of the staff member
Procedures
Transfer to lecturer/senior lecturer
7. The application is to be submitted to the academic head
8. The application will include evidence by way of a curriculum vitae (CV) and supporting evidence as to the achievements of the applicant, and the applicant's intentions regarding their intended research programme
9. The academic head will provide advice to the dean, then to a sub-committee of the Faculty Staffing Committee (FSC), as to whether:
- it is in the interests of the University to consider such a transfer
- the applicant meets the criteria for the grade sought under the Academic Standards policies
- the applicant would be appointed to a lecturer/senior lecturer position if one had been advertised
10. The sub-committee of the FSC will consider the evidence and provide advice to the FSC
11. The FSC will provide a recommendation to the dean
12. The dean will consider the recommendation of the FSC
13. The decision to approve or to decline the application remains a decision of the dean
14. Normally an offer of permanent employment as a lecturer/senior lecturer will be subject to an initial term and to (further) consideration under the Continuation policies
15. In the event that a senior tutor has been approved for continuation as a senior tutor, and subsequently is not granted continuation as a lecturer/senior lecturer, the staff member may elect to return to the senior tutor position
16. Where the dean approves transfer to the lecturer or senior lecturer grade, the transfer will normally be to the equivalent grade and salary step
17. The dean may negotiate alternative arrangements with the applicant if that is appropriate
Transfer to professional teaching fellow (PTF)
18. If a staff member is interested in transferring to a professional teaching fellow, this must be discussed with the academic head
19. If the academic head is supportive of the transfer, then a letter or recommendation is to be provided to the dean outlining the grounds on which the transfer is sought and appropriate level recommended on the PTF scale
20. The academic head is to discuss the appropriate level on the PTF scale with Human Resources
21. The letter of recommendation is to be approved by the dean
22. Continuation is not required in the role of PTF if the individual has already been continued at senior tutor
