Ihonuku Tōkeke | Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity
Professor Cathy Stinear BSc PhD
Cathy is responsible for the University’s strategic equity leadership and governance responsibilities. These are achieved by working in close collaboration with the Pro Vice-Chancellors Māori, Pacific, and Education so that Waipapa Taumata Rau is a welcoming and safe environment for our diverse students and staff to experience equitable access, participation, and success.
As Ihonuku Tōkeke, Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity, Cathy advises the Vice-Chancellor and is supported by policy advisers and an Equity Manager. She works closely with senior leaders across the University; with the Associate Deans and Directors Equity in the faculties and large-scale research institutes, and with Campus Life’s Associate Director Student Wellbeing and Engagement, and the Associate Director, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion HR. This team works together on a wide range of equity related policies, projects, measures, and accountabilities.
Equity is central to healthcare, which is Cathy’s background. Alongside her work as Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity, Cathy is also a clinical neuroscientist, leading a team of researchers working at Auckland City Hospital with people with disabilities following stroke. She also has lived experience of being a woman in STEMM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.
“I approach all of my work in teaching, learning, and service from an equity perspective, to promote equitable successes for learners and colleagues,” Cathy says. “That embodies what the University is striving for – that equity is embedded in all of our work.”
