First aid

Volunteering: Would you like to be a first aider?
If you are a member of staff and would like to volunteer for this important role, please talk to your manager.
Training for Designated Building First Aiders is paid for by the University’s central fund, while any others are paid for by their business unit.
The initial course is taught over two days, and a one-day refresher course is required every two years. Both courses are charged at a subsidised rate for the University.
In addition, specialty first aid courses for specific roles (e.g. Electrical Service Technicians) are also organised through the University.
How many First Aiders do I need?
You need to ensure at least one first aider is available at all times your building/department is open. This means taking into account, staff leave, breaks and sickness.
You must also consider:
- the number of workers at the workplace at any given time
- the nature of the work undertaken and its risks
- the likelihood of people being hurt, and how serious the injuries might be
- the physical size of the workplace and whether workers are scattered across different parts of it
- the location of the workplace and its distance from ambulance services, medical centres and hospitals
- whether other people (for example, students or members of the public) visit the workplace
Comprehensive First Aid Course (with Online Pre-Learning)
Instructions for Pre-Course Learning via Online Platform: Complete your pre-learning via the New Zealand Red Cross online learning platform (Intuto) before your 8-hour classroom session.
After you have registered for a scheduled session in Workday, Organisational Development (OD), UoA will provide participants' names and email addresses to NZ Red Cross three weeks (early enrolments) and one week ( for later registrations) before the classroom based session.
You will receive a separate email with your log-in information to the NZ Red Cross online (OL) learning platform (Intuto), depending on the approximate date you've registered in Workday (OD, UoA learning platform). Please also check spam and junk folders to ensure you have received the log-in details, which will read "My courses- Powered by NZ Red Cross (Intuto)".
Please complete the online learning at least 48 hours before the classroom session but no more than three months in advance. The online learning should take approximately four hours to complete. Pre-learning can be done at the participants' own pace. Learn at a time and location that is convenient for you and reduce the hours away from the workplace.
Once you have passed the online assessments, you will receive a completion badge by email from the NZ Red Cross, which you should either print and take to your classroom session or save to your mobile device to be checked by the First Aid Trainer. Please Note that you need to complete the online component to be able to attend the face-to-face course and be required to rebook for another day.
If you are NOT able to complete the pre-course learning or there are problems with the link, please get in touch with NZ Red Cross directly at firstaid@redcross.org.nz as soon as possible and copy in od@auckland.ac.nz
