Paredes-Mariño, a research fellow in the School of the Environment, took part in the expedition on the research vessel Tangaroa led by GNS Science.

The team were gathering data for further investigations into the giant eruption of the submarine volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, which includes the small islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai.

She was part of the team assessing volcanic rocks dredged from the seabed.

“These samples will be used for the whole team to further understand the history of the volcano and how this hyper-explosive eruption fits into that narrative," she says.
