Professor Nuala Gregory will become Dean of a new faculty which, from 2025, will combine the faculties of Arts, Education and Social Work and parts of Creative Arts and Industries.
Professor Nuala Gregory has been appointed Dean of the new faculty that, from January 2025, combines Arts, Education and Social Work and parts of Creative Arts and Industries at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.
A professor of fine arts, Professor Gregory has been the Dean of Creative Arts and Industries since 2022.
She has had 27 years of experience as a university academic, the past 17 of which have been as a senior manager at department and faculty level.
Originally from Northern Ireland, Professor Gregory came to New Zealand in 1997 to take up a part-time lecturing position at Elam School of Fine Arts, and became a full-time senior lecturer and Head of Painting within a year.
She is a notable artist, known for her colourful abstract paintings, printmaking and collage, and her work has been widely exhibited.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater says: “Professor Gregory will lead the establishment of the new faculty, including building an identity that encompasses the proud culture and heritage of the current faculties. Her leadership will undoubtedly contribute to the new faculty’s collegiality and success.”
We have a unique opportunity to create a faculty centred on shared values of education, social justice, the humanities, arts, and creativity.
Professor Gregory is looking forward to the challenge of leading the new faculty.
“Our long-term aims for the new faculty may well be very ambitious, but we can only succeed if we draw on our collective strengths,” she says.
“We have a unique opportunity to create a faculty centred on shared values of education, social justice, the humanities, arts, and creativity. Those are our areas of expertise and study, the things we care about so deeply, that we aim to impart to our students and the wider community.
“To have been entrusted by my colleagues to lead as Manukura in this moment is both humbling and a privilege.”
Professor Gregory has been head of Elam School of Fine Arts (2008-9), Associate Dean Academic (2005-8, 2009-10) and deputy chair of both the University's teaching and learning quality committee and an academic audit steering committee. She completed her PhD at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.
Nuala Gregory will take up the role of Dean from 5 August 2024.
