25 November 2024
Medal recognises outstanding research within 15 years of getting a PhD.
Associate Professor Miro Erkintalo won the 2024 Beatrice Hill Tinsley Medal for outstanding research published within 15 years of getting a PhD, awarded by the New Zealand Association of Scientists.
Erkintalo is a laser physicist in the Department of Physics who combines theoretical analyses, numerical modelling, and laboratory experiments to develop novel sources of laser light for applications ranging from telecommunications to sensing.
His research has had broad impact, with many highly cited articles including five articles in Nature journals over the past three years.
“He has made many pioneering contributions that have substantially advanced several emerging photonic technologies, including ultrashort- pulsed mode-locked fibre lasers, nonlinear optical frequency converters, and microresonator optical frequency combs,” his citation says.
“He is a firm believer in collaborative research and ascribes his success to the many outstanding students and colleagues he has had the privilege to work with.”
