The University of Auckland continues to demonstrate its commitment to academic excellence and research impact in its impressive results in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Subject Rankings.

The University, Waipapa Taumata Rau, achieved the top score among the New Zealand universities and recorded another strong performance relative to the prestigious Group of Eight (Go8) universities in Australia.

In the 2025 rankings, the Education programme (Faculty of Arts and Education) maintained its position in the top 50 globally, ranked at 34. This consistent performance underscores the University's dedication to providing world-class education and training for future educators.

Psychology (Faculty of Science) also strengthened its position. The subject leapt into the top 100, and is now ranked at 79. The Engineering programme (Faculty of Engineering and Design) has also shown good progress, moving up to the 101-125 band from the 126-150 band last year. Similarly, Computer Science (Faculty of Science) has climbed to the 151-175 band from the 176-200 band.

The University's performance in the THE Subject Rankings is particularly noteworthy when compared to the Group of Eight universities. Auckland has outperformed several Go8 universities in key subject areas, demonstrating its competitive edge and commitment to maintaining high academic standards. Education, for instance, ranks higher than many Go8 counterparts, and the significant improvement in Psychology also places Auckland ahead of several Go8 universities. The advancements in Engineering and Computer Science further highlight the University of Auckland’s growing influence and competitiveness in STEM fields.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dawn Freshwater, said that, in a highly competitive global market, any improvements in subject rank are the result of significant efforts by many staff across the faculties and the overall University community.

"By outperforming several Go8 universities in key subject areas, the University of Auckland continues to solidify its position as a leading institution in the Asia-Pacific region," she said.

She said the leadership team has implemented several strategic initiatives to enhance its research and reputation pillars, which are crucial for improving rankings. These initiatives include targeted support for research activities, fostering international collaborations, and enhancing the visibility of academic achievements and these efforts are already bearing fruit. Rankings assess five years of data, meaning initiatives can take time to reach their full potential.

The Times Higher Education Subject Rankings 2025 will be updated on this page some time on 22 January.
