University of Auckland among the world’s best for reputation

Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland has claimed the number one spot in Aotearoa New Zealand in the Times Higher Education Reputation Rankings for 2025.

Globally, the University placed 151-200 and is the top ranked New Zealand institution. It ranks =7 in Oceania, alongside the University of Adelaide and the University of Western Australia.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater says the reputation ranking reflects the view of global peers.

“It tells us that the University is recognised globally for excellence. This reputation has taken more than a century to build and reflects on New Zealanders, our education system, the quality of University of Auckland graduates and our world-class researchers.”

The rankings aim to provide the definitive list of the world’s most prestigious universities, as determined by senior academics from around the globe.

More than 55,000 academics from 182 countries participated in the world’s largest invitation-only academic survey, nominating the universities they consider the best for research and teaching in their field.

According to data released as part of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the University of Auckland received the highest share of votes out of New Zealand universities across nearly all subject areas, further solidifying its standing as a leader in academic excellence.

The University was also ranked in the top 1 percent in the world in the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for sustainability and placed in the top 8 percent globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2025.
