Accommodation Engagement Programme
Our Engagement Programme
Our programme is designed to ensure students create good healthy connections, have fun and are developmental. Every event/activity we do has key learning outcomes attached to it based on our Waka of Wellbeing.
Hui Whakatakatū | Orientation Programme:
Orientation Week takes place before the beginning of semester to welcome residents to their home on Campus. Our goals are to make sure residents make new connections, get to know Auckland and are academically prepared for study. Our action-packed week includes: Scavenger Hunts, infotainment lectures, Quiz Nights, Toga, Charity events, Post-Graduate Networking, floor meetings and much more.
Tātāwhāinga ā-Wharenoho | Inter-Residential Events:
A crowd favourite of the Ngā Wharenoho engagement programme are our Inter-Residential Events. These competitions between each Residence display their Hall spirit and compete for the overall Championship trophy. The 2023 Champion was Carlaw Park Student Village.
The 2024 tournaments will resume in March. Which team will bring home the championship trophy?

Manaakitanga, our charity work:
Manaakitanga is behaviour that acknowledges the mana of others as having equal or greater importance than one's own, through the expression of aroha, hospitality, generosity and mutual respect.
Giving back to the wider community is important to all of us. We include service based events in our Orientation programmes and champion causes throughout the year. Our supported charities and service initiatives include:
- Ronald McDonald House/Starship - O'Rorke Hall
- TBC - Carlaw Park Student Village
- Tania Dalton Foundation - Grafton Hall & Student Flats
- Rainbow Youth - Waipārūrū Hall
- Shave for a Cure - University Hall - Towers
- SPCA - 55 Symonds & Te Tirohanga o te Tōangaroa
Balls and Formal celebrations:
A highlight for members and a chance to dress up and celebrate your new Whānau! Our Halls hold their annual Balls in August and our Residences hold theirs in September/October each year.
Resident Grant Scheme:
Resident Grant Scheme is an initiative where you as a resident can request event funding and support from your Accommodation team to deliver an event or a value add initiative in your Accommodation community. You can request funding between orientation week and study week.
Residential Excellence Awards:
The Residential Excellence Awards are an opportunity to recognise our accommodation community. There are a range of categories:
- Āwhina | Service
- Kotahitanga | Inclusion
- Tiaki Taiao | Sustainability
- Whanaungatanga | Community
Students who have excelled in these categories can be nominated for an award by a member of the accommodation team, or a fellow student and will receive their award during the award ceremony, the Residential Excellence Gala in September.
Other features of our engagement programme:
In addition to the social events, our residents also participate in regular community meetings and activities, goal setting with RAs, life and academic skill workshops, study groups, our annual Green your room competition, Diversity weekend celebrations, cultural events and more!
