What is the healthy campus programme?

A visionary initiative, developed by Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) and dedicated to enhancing the overall wellbeing of students, staff, and the wider campus community. The goal with this project is to establish a comprehensive interdisciplinary system that fosters wellbeing, promotes a healthy lifestyle, and raises awareness among students and campus communities on these vital aspects of life.

The Healthy Campus standard includes a field of action related to the management of the Healthy Campus approach, as well as seven fields of action and activities:

  1. Healthy campus management
  2. Physical activity and sport
  3. Nutrition
  4. Disease prevention
  5. Mental and social health
  6. Risk behaviour
  7. Environment, sustainability, and social responsibility

These domains of the programme have been defined by considering the difficulties that may arise among campus communities and how the domains may directly contribute to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (2030). Participation in the programme can not only help universities develop strategies and activities through a collaborative approach but also achieve an internationally recognised certification.

There are multiple levels of accreditation: Certified, Certified Bronze, Certified Silver, Certified Gold, and Certified Platinum.

For us, the Healthy Campus programme ensures the wellbeing efforts across our University are synergistic to increase the impact of the resources available. Its purpose contributes to an enhanced identity that connects with the diverse staff, students, alums, and whānau audiences within our unique place in the world.  For this reason, our long-term goal is to achieve Platinum Certification and to encourage students, staff, and campus members alike to engage in a healthy lifestyle.

Key values

To ensure the Healthy Campus programme aligns with the kaupapa and strategic values of the University, we are guided by the values and principles of:

  1. Sustainability: to act as kaitiaki for our physical and digital land so that the world is better tomorrow than it is today.
  2. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: to act with manaakitanga to the campus community, which includes creating opportunities for peoples and groups, particularly for those who experience prejudice, discrimination, intolerance, underrepresentation, or who have been historically excluded.
  3. Te Tiriti o Waitangi: to uphold our commitment and obligation under Te Tiriti o Waitangi through active protection, meaningful participation, and partnership across all levels of Healthy Campus to achieve the desired outcomes for all in our campus community.

Who is leading the work?

During 2023, an Operational Lead was appointed to establish the strategic direction to and begin the University’s commitment to the Healthy Campus Programme. Since then, an operational team within Campus Life has been developed to work towards achieving the initial certification. The team consists of:
