Read why Riya Ann Rajeesh would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.

Riya Ann Rajeesh

I am a second-year Biomedical Science student deeply committed to education, research, and community engagement. As the class representative for BIOSCI 204 last semester, I advocated for student interests and collaborated with academic staff to ensure concerns were addressed, demonstrating my strong communication and management skills. More recently, I volunteered for Mānawa Mai Day 2024, where I further developed my commitment to the University’s community and its diverse student body. This experience, combined with my prior representative role, drives me to take this involvement forward as a Student Representative on the University Council.

My teaching experience as a catechism teacher and private tutor has taught me the importance of adapting teaching styles to meet the needs of diverse students. I aspire to teach at the university level and am dedicated to continuously improving the learning experience for others. In terms of research, my degree is highly research-focused, providing me with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to discussions about the University’s research initiatives. I am confident I can help ensure that teaching and research are both student-centred and innovative.

In addition to my academic and teaching experience, I understand the value of diversity and inclusion. Having lived in the Middle East for 18 years before moving to New Zealand, I have firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by students transitioning into new cultural and academic environments. This experience gives me a unique perspective on the importance of fostering an inclusive community that supports and celebrates its diverse members. I am committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of background, feel represented and supported.

With a strong foundation in management from my role as a class representative, private tutor, and catechism teacher, I have developed skills in organization, leadership, and advocacy. These roles have honed my ability to manage responsibilities efficiently, communicate effectively, and make thoughtful decisions under pressure. As a member of the Council, I would bring these skills to ensure that the student body is heard and represented in the University’s strategic decisions.

I believe my background, experience, and passion for education, research, and diversity make me a suitable candidate for the position of Student Representative. I am excited by the opportunity to contribute to the University Council and help shape the future of the University of Auckland.

Thank you for considering my candidacy.

Regards,
Riya Ann Rajeesh
