Candidate: Uvindu Ranasinghe
Read why Uvindu Ranasinghe would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.
Kia Ora, everyone,
Once upon a time, I was a scared and confused high schooler who stepped onto the university grounds in the midst of a COVID outbreak. My first thought of University was, “Wow, I’m mega screwed,” as I looked at all my canvas assignments, a million announcements telling me to buy this textbook and that textbook. In honesty, as a first year, I felt like I was a lamb sent for slaughter. However, I was lucky to have friends who guided me through these challenging times, teaching me new things about university life and how to move forward. One thing I learned about the University that day was community, which drives this University to its future. I want to foster such a community where people feel comfortable expressing themselves, have opportunities to try new things, make new friends, and, above all else, study something that they are passionate about. With this in mind, I have decided to run as a University Council student representative to allow everyone in the University to strive for their best potential.
I want to achieve this by being a hands-on representative; I want to stand up for our students in all parts of life while representing their voices. First and foremost, I will ensure that I keep a close relationship with AUSA and with class representatives about their current degrees and the hardships that they are facing. I have experienced most parts of the University by being in University accommodation as a resident and a Residential Advisor. I have been a member of multiple clubs and learned about what the University offers. I also had the fantastic opportunity to be the UOA Volunteers Club Co-President this year. I want to get the voice of these clubs and make these decisions as they are the keystone that focuses on student life at the University.
It is essential to know that things at university are too complex to be summed up in a few words. As a student representative, I want to fight for our students; I want to have those hard discussions about increasing rent prices in University accommodations, cutting of some fantastic classes, and faculty mergers. I want to foster a close connection with the university staff and the students and be the bride that lets each other communicate with each other. I do not want to make empty promises; I want to make a change by standing up for what's right.
With your vote, I want to be the friendly face you can rely on during hardships. I will ensure you are all heard when major university decisions are made. I will work hard to have a true and diverse representation. Above all, I want to be a reliable friend who can help you achieve your potential.
