Read why Yan Yang would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.
My name is Yan Yang, and I am thrilled to begin my Master of Business Analytics at the University of Auckland this September. With nine years of professional experience, most recently as a Product Manager at Tencent, I bring a robust blend of industry knowledge, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of collaborative team dynamics. My journey through the fast-paced tech industry has sharpened my problem-solving skills and ability to navigate complex challenges, qualities I believe will be invaluable as a Student Representative.
I am eager to contribute to the university in multiple dimensions—particularly teaching, research, community engagement, and student management. As a Product Manager, I led cross-functional teams, ensuring that diverse perspectives were integrated into decision-making processes. This experience has given me a strong foundation in leadership and the ability to communicate effectively across cultural and professional boundaries. As a Student Representative, I will use these skills to ensure that the voices of all students are heard and considered in the university’s decision-making processes.
In the realm of teaching and research, I am passionate about bridging the gap between academia and industry. I believe that a university education should not only impart theoretical knowledge but also provide students with the tools and experiences they need to excel in the real world. I will advocate for initiatives that bring industry professionals into the classroom, create more opportunities for internships and real-world projects, and support research that addresses contemporary business challenges.
Community understanding is another area where I believe I can make a significant impact. Moving to a new country and adapting to a new academic environment can be challenging, and I want to help make this transition as smooth as possible for new students. I plan to work closely with the university administration to develop programs that facilitate cultural exchange and foster a sense of belonging among all students, regardless of their background. Whether it’s through peer mentoring, cultural events, or workshops on navigating academic life, I am committed to creating an inclusive environment where every student feels supported and valued.
Reflecting the diversity of our student body is a responsibility I take very seriously. Having worked at a global company like Tencent, I have seen firsthand the value of diverse perspectives in driving innovation and solving complex problems. I will strive to ensure that the university’s policies and initiatives are inclusive and that they celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of our student community. This includes advocating for more diverse representation in leadership roles, supporting student organizations that promote cultural awareness, and ensuring that university events and activities are accessible to all.
In conclusion, I am passionate about contributing to the University of Auckland as a Student Representative. I am eager to use my skills and experience to support my peers, enhance the quality of our education, and promote a more inclusive and vibrant university community.
