The 3MT experience
We chatted to last year's finalists to find out why they recommend taking part in 3MT.

Bex Ansell (Faculty of Arts and Education): 3MT took my confidence and skills in public speaking to the next level... Now, whenever anyone asks about my PhD I have a short pitch ready, and know how to communicate my work at a moment's notice. I'm in control of the words I use, and how I frame it.

Claire Beach (Business School): The Faculty Heats are a great way to give 3MT a go in a relaxed, supportive environment... The workshops were a bonus - full of practical tips on engaging an audience and building confidence in public speaking.

Inka Pleiss (Faculty of Science): I think all up and coming researchers should engage with opportunities to communicate their research to a wider audience. It is easy to forget how amazing our research is, and a lot of the time the only people that know about it are you and your supervisors. 3MT gives you a platform to develop the skills required to rephrase your research so that anyone can benefit from it. (University of Auckland 3MT Winner 2024)

Isurie Akarawita (Faculty of Engineering and Design): Participating in the 3MT was a transformative experience... The process not only sharpened my communication skills and boosted my confidence in public speaking, but it also created many other opportunities to highlight my work. (University of Auckland 3MT Runner-Up 2024)

Jiajia Lin (Faculty of Arts and Education): Participating in 3MT provided an invaluable opportunity to connect with like-minded people. I received a lot of encouragement and inspiration from them. It’s a great way to sharpen your communication skills and helps you connect your research with the real world. Whether you win or not, you will feel the growth inside of you. Don’t miss this chance to challenge yourself and showcase your research!

Jie Bao (Faculty of Arts and Education): Taking part in 3MT boosted my confidence in speaking to a wider audience and helped me connect with other like-minded and passionate researchers. Whether you win or lose, it’s definitely an exceptional opportunity for personal growth!

Komal Srinivasa (Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences): I found that entering the 3MT competition was a good way to get people interested and talking about my research! As I won the faculty heat, I had an opportunity to get some media coverage and professional photos taken as well.

Lilly Peng (Faculty of Engineering and Design): It allowed me to meet many other students from different faculties and listen to their stories. As a community of participants, the 3MT community is very supportive of each other. It was a fun time preparing together and attending workshops.

Logan Ritchie (ABI): 3MT has been really helpful, not just for being better able to communicate my thesis topic with others, but also helping me really clarify in my own head what the core of my project was about, which came in really handy when actually writing the full thesis. (University of Auckland 3MT People's Choice 2024)

Sandra Gómez Gálvez (Faculty of Science): I had to confront my own fears. Coming from a non-English-speaking background, presenting in English was really difficult for me, but 3MT gave me the opportunity to face that challenge and improve both my communication and presentation skills.
