Whare Kai
Accessible, fresh produce conveniently located and at a low cost
Whare Kai is now closed for the remainder of 2025. They will reopen in Semester One 2026, exact dates TBC.
Whare Kai is an Auckland Council initiative that aims to transform the Albert Park cottage into a food-focused cultural hub. As the home of the Kitchen Project, Whare Kai also hosts the Mission Grocer, a social enterprise dedicated to providing affordable, healthy food to the central Auckland community.
The shop offers reasonably priced seasonal fruit and vegetables, which are available either individually or in $15 produce bags.
Students receive a 10% discount on their purchases. Those experiencing financial hardship may also be eligible to receive free produce bags donated by the community. Availability of these bags may vary.
Customers who wish to support others can choose to "pay it forward" by purchasing a bag for someone in need. Purchases can be made in person or reserved online. This is a great option for family members who want to ensure their student relatives have consistent access to fresh produce.
