Hidden Disabilities Sunflower

Ratonga Hauātanga Tauira | Student Disability Services (SDS) has introduced the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative to make disability support more accessible on campus.

What is the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower?

If you see someone wearing a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower with a green background, they may have a disability, condition or chronic illness that is not immediately obvious. It indicates that a person may have additional support needs which cannot be easily seen.

This initiative is part of a global movement which aims to support people with hidden disabilities with access in their community. This is most often seen in environments such as airports, shopping centres and, more recently, educational institutions.

What does this mean at the University?

You can pick up a piece of Sunflower apparel from Student Disability Services or Inclusive Learning.  The three types of apparel you may see on campus include lanyards, wristbands and badges.

FAQ

Where can I pick up a Sunflower?

Green apparel can be collected from both the Student Disability Services and Inclusive Learning offices on City Campus by staff or students.

Is there a cost involved?

Apparel is free and is available to any staff and student who has a hidden disability. You do not need to be registered with Student Disability Services, and you do not need to tell us about your disability to request apparel.

Do I have to disclose my disability to wear the Sunflower?

Within the University, you do not need to disclose your disability to wear the Sunflower. It is just a visual way to indicate you may have additional needs. However, it is worth noting you may be asked to make disclosures to access disability support.

What should I do if I see someone wearing the Sunflower?

It’s important not to ask about the person’s disability. Instead, the Sunflower is a signal that a person may have additional support needs, so it is important to always be understanding and patient when interacting with them.

For staff, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower training sessions are currently being piloted across the University. If you are interested in attending a training session,  email disabilities@auckland.ac.nz .
