Igor Felippe
Igor, from Brazil, received a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship. He completed his PhD in Biomedical Science in 2022 and is now working as a research fellow at the University of Auckland.
“Without my scholarship I could not have moved to New Zealand to pursue my dream of studying for a PhD abroad. It’s not easy to find an institution that offers scholarships for international students covering both tuition fees and a generous allowance.
“As a research fellow at the University I ask scientific questions and design and carry out experiments to find solutions to problems in society. Specifically, I study how cardiovascular diseases develop, so I can propose new therapeutic interventions. I chose this particular field because cardiovascular diseases are now the world’s biggest killers.
My PhD degree was essential to achieve my dream to work as a researcher.
“I think the University of Auckland is a brilliant institution - it’s well-recognised worldwide and has top scientists as part of its team. It also offers state-of-the-art facilities, technology and study resources.
“Indeed, Auckland is a beautiful city - well organised, safe and clean. There’s lots of places to explore but it’s also easy enough to jump in a car on a road trip to enjoy the rest of this amazing country.
“Both the University and New Zealand have a very good work-life balance as prospective places to work and live. I can say with confidence that the University of Auckland is an excellent choice!”
