“I was pregnant when I started at the University of Auckland, and I worried that I’d be asked to leave my course and give up my scholarship. Instead, I received an overwhelming level of support from everyone including my supervisors and fellow PhD students.
“I’ve also been lucky enough to receive the Dean’s Doctoral Scholarship, without which I would really struggle. But with this, my tuition fees, health insurance and a substantial allowance are all covered. I couldn’t ask for much more!
There are so many opportunities at the University to study in almost any discipline and still have a great work-life balance.
“I stay in safe and friendly self-catered family accommodation which provides me with the opportunity to live well and concentrate on my research. There are also many places where I can relax with my family, and facilities and events that encourage networking among the students who live here.
“My research here considers the digital cross-cultural consumer . I am examining the consumer patterns of African immigrants in New Zealand, how they adapt to the Kiwi consumption culture, and the role that technology plays in this.
“Once I graduate, my plan is to become a leading visual qualitative marketing researcher and an information and communication technologies (ICT) project manager. My PhD in Marketing will provide me with essential skills that I need to manage ICT projects - like analysing complex data, conducting market research and identifying market trends.
“There are so many opportunities at the University to study in almost any discipline and still have a great work-life balance. I’ve always wanted to study at a university with great diversity and in a city with great weather - and so far it has been a very fulfilling experience! I am so glad I chose to come to the University of Auckland.”
