Kate Wood

Kate is from the United States and is studying towards a Bachelor of Global Studies. She would like to continue with a Masters degree before embarking on a career in global policy.

"I knew I wanted to go to university outside of the US for a long time; I just wasn’t sure where until I found the University of Auckland," says Kate. "New Zealand has some of the most incredible nature in the world, a great work-life balance, and a really unique perspective on the world. The Global Studies programme at Auckland was my main reason for studying here, and I’m so happy I did. I can’t imagine getting my degree anywhere else."

"I have had the privilege of learning from professors from all over the world; they’ve all been incredibly knowledgeable in their fields and well-equipped to share that knowledge with their students," she notes. "The Global Studies department really emphasizes reflexivity and multidimensional thinking."

Kate also highlights the appeal of Auckland itself. "I came to Auckland because it is New Zealand’s most international city, with the best schools. It is culturally diverse, has a wide range of opportunities, and is a very liveable city."

"I left my old university because I wanted to go somewhere with a more progressive and global approach. At Auckland, I feel more independent and in control of my studies."

Kate has some advice for those considering the move to the University of Auckland. "New Zealand is truly one of a kind. I’ve learned so much and grown so much in my time here. Moving abroad is intimidating, but if you are willing to push your boundaries, take the leap to study here – and make sure you pack a rain jacket!"
