Epri Pratiwi

Epri is an Engineering doctoral candidate from Indonesia. A Faculty of Engineering Scholarship is helping her achieve her dreams of working in the field of hearing science and auditory perception.

Epri chose the University of Auckland for her PhD studies after discovering an opportunity that aligned with her research interests and career goals. "While browsing the university's website, I came across a post from my current supervisor, who was seeking a PhD student to work on a topic related to hearing, an area I am deeply passionate about".

She now works at the Communication Acoustics Laboratory, and enjoys access to excellent facilities and equipment that support her research, including an acoustic chamber. "My current research focuses on neural correlates and listening effort of speech perception in different acoustic environments".

As an international student, she feels well-supported by her supervisors and colleagues. "My supervisors have been supportive guides, offering invaluable mentorship and encouragement. My colleagues have been welcoming and compassionate as I adapt to the a environment. We have weekly meetings or lunches to share progress and engage in discussions to improve our research".

Since relocating from Taipei to Auckland in February 2024, Epri has enjoyed the daily opportunities to engage in English conversations. She also enjoys being a part of a running club. "Auckland offers various running routes, ranging from hilly terrains to flat roads, all with scenic views of the sea, especially along Mission Bay.

One of Epri’s most memorable experiences so far was visiting
a marae, a traditional Māori meeting ground, to celebrate a colleague’s 60th
birthday at Pūrekireki Marae in Pirongia. "This visit offered profound
insights into Māori culture, traditions, and the values of community and
respect that are deeply embedded in New Zealand society".

Engaging with leading researchers and fellow students has been a significant change, enhancing my professional connections and collaborative potential.

Orientation Week at the University of Auckland is packed with events and activities designed to help new students feel welcome and prepared. She found the academic workshops particularly useful and appreciates the resources provided to help new students adapt.

Being part of the Muslim Student Association (MSA Auckland) and the Indonesian Student Union (PPI Auckland) has been an enriching experience for her. "Joining a student club is a great way to meet new people, explore your interests, and get involved in campus life".

Epri’s scholarship has been instrumental in helping her achieve her academic dreams. "It provided financial support that eased the burden of tuition fees, living expenses, and other educational costs, allowing me to focus on my studies and pursue my academic and career aspirations with greater freedom and confidence”.
