Jeff Good

Originally from the United States, Jeff is pursuing his PhD in Marine Science and is based at the Leigh Marine Laboratory, roughly 100kms north of Auckland.

"I value the proximity and accessibility of the ocean that allows for such a diverse range of marine research. The community of like-minded scientists, who are all willing to aid in everyone else’s research projects, provides an unshakeable camaraderie that is unique to our programme," Jeff shares.

"As an international student, I have been impressed with the support from the International Office. I have taken advantage of their New Zealand arrival transportation and multiple seminars to educate international students on successful living in New Zealand," he says. He adds that “the knowledge imparted to international students during orientation is some of the most valuable”.

"My plan is to return home to the United States for further education or employment in the field of marine science upon completion of my degree. I am excited to share the collaborations and advancements made possible by my unique education in New Zealand," he says. Jeff believes that the novelty of his studies at the University of Auckland can greatly enhance the diversity of scientific thinking in other countries and labs around the world.

Jeff offers practical advice for those considering studying at the University of Auckland. "My best advice is twofold: prepare the best you can. Know how to get transportation, your accommodation options, your financial situation, and what your chosen programme will entail and provide you. If everything is feasible, do it. There’s a lot of doubt that surrounds a large move, but the benefits of the University of Auckland and such an amazing country have been entirely worthwhile," he advises.
