Mathias Roesler

Mathias comes from France and is a doctoral candidate in Bioengineering at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute.

Mathias' research focuses on the electrical activity in the uterus outside of pregnancy. "This is crucial to understand because dysfunction of the normal activity can potentially cause infertility or endometriosis," he explains. He chose this field because he wanted to make a positive impact on health, particularly in women's health.

Mathias values the flexibility his programme offers. "My supervisors give me enough space to do my work and as long as I deliver, I can set my own hours," he explains. This autonomy allows him to balance his research with personal interests and activities.

After his studies, Mathias aims to continue working in New Zealand and hopes to remain involved with the Auckland Bioengineering Institute. "Getting a PhD will open a lot of doors," he believes, and he is optimistic about the future opportunities his degree will bring.

One of the aspects Mathias enjoys most about living in Auckland is the diversity of sceneries. "You can be in the middle of the city one minute and the next be in the middle of the bush in the Domain, on a ferry to a remote island to hike for the day, or on top of a volcano," he says. This variety provides endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.

For those considering studying at the University of Auckland, Mathias offers encouraging advice: "For me, it was a big move, a total shot in the dark since I had never been here before and halfway around the world from home, but it has been without a doubt one of the best decisions I made. If you are hesitating, take the chance."
