Yousif Badri

With funding from the Ministry of Business and Innovation’s Endeavour Fund, Yousif, a Sudanese doctoral candidate, is conducting research to improve living conditions of medium density housing and apartments in New Zealand.

Yousif was drawn to the University of Auckland by the research project which he is now working on. “It aims to reduce impact noise, such as footfall, through lightweight timber floors using granular materials, which is innovative but challenging”.

"The project research team includes members with various expertise in mechanical engineering, like my co-supervisor Prof. John Cater, and skilled acousticians led by Dr. George Dodd. Most research projects in the university involve multiple researchers, offering you valuable collaborative experience during your PhD".

As part of his research, Yousif uses some of the specialised facilities in the Faculty of Engineering’s Mechanical Engineering department. “I have the privilege of exploring and contributing to large-scale industrial research and testing of building elements at the Acoustics Testing Service (ATS). This service is managed and run by a group of staff, including Dr. Andrew Hall and Gian Schmid, who are knowledgeable and patient in sharing their knowledge and experience”.

The Acoustics & Vibration Research Centre is becoming one of the world's leading centres, other vibration institutes should prepare to feel the rumble of competition!

The research centre’s monthly meetings offers opportunity for learning outside of the lab and office. "Staff and PhD students present their recent findings in vibration and acoustics and receive feedback. This provides the opportunity to experience an academic conference environment each month without the hassle and cost of travelling overseas".

The supportive academic staff make it easier for new international students to adapt to the new environment. “The line between international and domestic students is not present at the University. The humble and respectful academic staff make it easier for new international students to adapt to the new environment”.

“Finding affordable accommodation for a young family near the University was initially a challenge. This gave my family and I the opportunity to live in the suburbs, where we enjoy a nice, quiet environment that I highly recommend”.
