Linh Tran
An awardee of the International Student Excellence Scholarship, Linh chose the University of Auckland for its reputation in the field of psychology for her Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours). Along with the diverse and inclusive academic environment, the university’s welcoming atmosphere particularly appealed to her.
Linh has found the connections with lecturers, support staff, and classmates incredibly rewarding “making my academic journey rewarding and memorable despite the physical distance to my home of Vietnam”.
The programme greatly fosters her critical thinking, analytical skills and independence. “As New Zealand education aims at self-directed learning and research, I needed to learn to take more initiative in choosing my own schedule and classes. This was a challenging for me initially, but it helped me grow mentally and academically, allowing me to take ownership of my education”. Additionally, she appreciates the "cosy study areas in different places and buildings" on campus for a conducive environment for learning.
Inspired by close friends living with ADHD, Linh is working on research “focusing on using Virtual Reality (VR) to measure the dynamics of attention for people, which can potentially enrich the diagnosis of ADHD”. Her work is showing promise in advancing our understanding of attention disorders and enhancing the well-being of ADHD patients.
“With the solid foundation provided by my degree, I am determined to pursue further studies and continue with meaningful scientific research and contribute to advancing psychological science and address critical societal issues”.
Working with the University’s Alumni office has given Linh insight into New Zealand’s emphasis on work-life balance and laid-back lifestyle embraced by Kiwis, a pleasant surprise for her. "This approach not only fosters a supportive study and work environment, but also allows people to take good care of their well-being and professional growth."
She advices anyone thinking about making the move to study at the University of Auckland that it “offers a great deal of resources for research and academic pathways. Make sure to explore these resources and use them to enhance your learning experience”.
