Sachin Rudrappa

After working for four years in the IT industry in India, Sachin decided to return to study with a Master of Professional Studies in Data Science, to take his career to the next level. He is a recipient of a University of Auckland India High Achievers Scholarship.

Getting a scholarship played a very important role in his studies. “The support has allowed me to focus academically, upskill myself, and manage other important areas of my life without needing to balance my time and responsibilities with a part-time job”.

Aside from the University’s high ranking, Sachin has had a “long-held aspiration to pursue education abroad, and the country's exceptional educational standards and multicultural lifestyle greatly appeal to me. Additionally, the opportunity to learn the R programming language in its birthplace adds an exciting dimension to my academic journey.”

He enjoys and values the hands-on learning experience. “Through practical assignments, tutorials, and laboratory sessions, I have been able to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios”. He also appreciates the supportive and approachable faculty staff members.

As an international student, he has had a supportive and welcoming environment. “The student support team has been exceptional in assisting with every aspect of my university life, from helping with administrative queries to providing personal and academic support.”

What surprised me most about life in New Zealand is the tranquillity! Coming from a bustling and lively country, the peacefulness has been a refreshing change, allowing me to focus and relax in ways I hadn't anticipated.

To set himself up for future success, he has made use of Career Development and Employability Services (CDES), who offer “comprehensive career advice, assistance with CV making, interview preparation, and workshops that have greatly contributed to my professional development”.

“One standout experience was participating in a cultural exchange programme during orientation week, where I had the opportunity to learn about and immerse myself in the traditions and customs of the indigenous Māori culture. It was an incredibly enriching experience and provided insight into the rich cultural heritage of New Zealand”.

His advice for those thinking about making the move to study here at the University of Auckland is to “embrace the opportunity wholeheartedly. The University of Auckland provides a rich academic experience in a vibrant learning environment amidst the beauty of New Zealand”.
