Deferment of previous US student loans and enrolment reporting
If you are enrolled in half-time study or more, we will report your enrolment to the US Department of Education.
Please note: The University is unable to defer the repayment of loans previously borrowed under the William D. Ford Direct Loan program.
In-school deferment request
If you are receiving US Financial Aid while at the University of Auckland (the University), we will report your enrolment as soon as your programme starts so any previous US Financial Aid loans can be deferred.
If you are not taking out loans while at the University, please contact our Financial Aid Coordinator to ask us to report your enrolment to the US Department of Education. You will need to provide your Social Security Number and date of birth so that we can locate your details in the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS).
In exceptional circumstances, if your lender/servicer is not registered to use the NSLDS, we can complete a paper In-School Deferment Request for you. Please complete the borrower’s section before you ask the Financial Aid Coordinator to complete the institution section.
For more information, please see the 'In-School Deferment' section at Student Loan Deferment.
Enrolment reporting
The US Federal regulations require the University to report the enrolment status of students who received a Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) and the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) to the US Department of Education.
The University updates students’ enrolment information in the NSLDS database every two months. The enrolment information is then reported to guarantors, lenders, and servicers of student loans.
A student’s enrolment status determines eligibility for in-school status, deferment, grace periods, and repayments as well as the government’s payment of interest subsidies.
