Endre reflects on how Māori culture impacts his perspective as an engineer and a person
I knew I wanted to experience a different part of the world and New Zealand is about as
far away from home as I can get. UoA stood out as a high-quality university that had the
perfect course profile for my studies. Specifically a course on industry 4.0 that I wanted to
learn more about.
I like the size of Auckland, it’s big enough that there is a lot of things to explore and do, but
not so big that you feel lost. New Zealand has a lot of beautiful and unique nature and
seeing it in person is just something completely different than just seeing the pictures.
In addition to my more technical courses as an engineer I am taking a course called Science in Aotearoa and it has been really interesting to learn about science and technology in the context of New Zealand and its history. I’ve gotten a much deeper understanding around different knowledge systems, and the ethics and cultural considerations at play in research and work. Even though I’ve just scratched the surface I also feel that I’ve learned more about New Zealand history and Māori culture than I thought I would, and it has given me a lot of new perspectives that I’ll take with me in my future career and my human experience.
