The Award was established in 2024 and is funded by Lady Rosemary Buchanan, a former principal dancer with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, and a significant supporter of creative research in Dance Studies at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

The intention of the Award is to encourage and support Dance Studies students in the Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries to engage in extended residencies abroad, for research purposes, during the period of their PhD study.
