The Scholarship was established in 2019 and is funded by the Mokaraka Trust. The Trust was founded by Melanie Smith (Ngāpuhi), an alumnus of Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, current CEO of National Exhibition Centre (NEC) Group in the United Kingdom, who has held extensive leadership roles during her career, and who has travelled to every country in the world. The Trust aims to inspire wāhine Māori to be ambitious in their career and leadership goals.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and support young high achieving wāhine Māori studying in the University of Auckland Business School, and their desire to achieve leadership roles in their future careers.

Scholarship applications will usually open around six weeks before the closing date. Please read the regulations carefully to be sure you are eligible before you apply.
