Straight to postgrad study
After completing their bachelors degree, many students are motivated to continue straight to postgrad study. There are lots of good reasons for this choice.
A demanding job market
When opportunities are scarce and employer expectations are high, the right postgrad qualification can really change your game. Graduate programmes aren’t always about theoretical academia. Many have a strong practical and vocational foundation.
“I found it challenging to land a job, so it was a good opportunity to do my masters and familiarise myself with the latest building challenges in New Zealand… My degree will prepare me for a PhD, it will help me get the jobs I want, whether in academia or industry.”
Trishna Newson, Master of Architecture
“The MPP also provided a lot of great opportunities for collaboration on research projects and exposure to workplace settings through external internships.”
Eddie Tuiavii, Master of Public Policy
“Doing masters level study really challenged me to become a more critical and reflective thinker. The practical placements that you go on through your studies also really helped me grow and become more confident.”
Rachel Bruns, Master of Social Work
Small classes, big support
Postgrad studies bring additional challenges, but small classes mean individualised attention and support. That support is especially helpful for students who haven't taken a break for professional or life experience. Small cohorts also bring a whole new social dimension to postgrad study.
“My advice is to make the most of the expertise of your lecturers. The classes are smaller and often have more space for discussion, so lecturers have time to answer your questions ... I loved the opportunities to engage with the cohort and build a network of not only colleagues but friends."
Benjamin Robb, Master of Commerce
"I loved how small my classes were; it allowed for incredible discussion with both professors and students, opened my eyes to a heap of different perspectives, and widened the scope of my knowledge … During my programme, there was so much support; my supervisors were always open to meeting and helping me."
Maddy Holland, Nga Puhi, Master of Global Studies
Connections for innovation and entrepreneurship
Postgrad study brings close contact with lecturers and industry networks. They can help not only with academic queries and future employment but also with entrepreneurial opportunities. If your undergrad experience has sparked an entrepreneurial mindset, the postgrad environment is a great place to make things happen!
“My degree set me up with the skills I need to translate robust qualitative research into product solutions, and the wider professional network to enable those solutions to drive change in healthcare delivery.”
Larissa Michelsen, Master of Engineering
