NVivo Core Skills

NVivo is data analysis software designed for researchers working with qualitative information, such as interviews, documents, survey data and webpages.

This course covers the basics of NVivo, and is ideal for those who are new to the software. We’ll cover NVivo from start to finish, walking you though how to set up a project and work with data, including a variety of coding techniques.

More advanced features such as queries, reporting and visualizations will also be briefly introduced.

Key topics

  • Navigating the NVivo interface
  • Setting up and working with NVivo projects, including saving and backing up
  • Preparing, importing, and working with data (e.g., PDFs and Word documents)
  • Coding data and selecting appropriate coding techniques
  • Using memos to record project-related information
  • Creating and organising folders to tailor the scope of queries
  • Performing keyword searches and understanding their role in qualitative analysis
  • Using reporting tools to extract key data and insights

Workshop format

This is a practical, hands-on session where attendees will work with example datasets provided by the facilitator. No prior knowledge of NVivo is required, although a basic understanding of qualitative analysis procedures may be helpful.

Important notes

This workshop is designed for researchers seeking an efficient way to manage and analyse qualitative data. It is suitable for both new and existing NVivo users.

NVivo R1 will be used during the session. For those interested in further developing their skills, Academic Consulting offers more advanced NVivo courses.
