Programme overview
The Master of Social Work prepares you for advanced professional responsibility in social work.
You will learn advanced approaches and interventions in social work practice, and develop knowledge, skills and experience in critiquing and undertaking social work research to enhance your practice.
The programme enables social work practitioners to undertake further study in subjects related to their professional practice and then undertake research in an area of special interest.

Programme structure
Research Masters 120 points
- 120 points: Thesis (SOCWORK 796)
or
- 30 points from a range of elective courses in Education Professional Studies, Education, Professional Counselling, Professional Supervision, Social Work, Social Work Child and Family Practice, Social Work Health Practice, and Social Work Youth Practice.
- 90 points: Research Portfolio (SOCWORK 797)
Research Masters 240 points
- 120 points from a range of courses in Education Professional Studies, Education, Professional Counselling, Professional Supervision, Social Work, Social Work Child and Family Practice, Social Work Health Practice, and Social Work Youth Practice.
- 120 points: Thesis (SOCWORK 796)
or
- 150 points from a range of courses in Education Professional Studies, Education, Professional Counselling, Professional Supervision, Social Work, Social Work Child and Family Practice, Social Work Health Practice, and Social Work Youth Practice.

You must have completed a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) with a GPA of 5.0 in at least 90 points of the most advanced courses taken.
Alternatively, you must have completed:
- a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Supervision with a GPA of 5.0 and hold a qualification in social work
or
- a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Social Work) or Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work with a GPA of 5.0.
Note: You may need to take an approved 30-point research methods course if this was not included in your postgraduate diploma or honours degree.
You must have completed a Bachelor of Social Work, with a GPA of 5.0 in at least 90 points of the most advanced courses taken.
Other pathways to study
If you do not meet the GPA requirements you can still gain entry if you successfully demonstrate capacity to undertake advanced study and research for this degree.

Fees are set in advance of each calendar year and will be updated on this website. Fees are inclusive of 15% GST, but do not include the Student Services Fee, course books, travel and health insurance, or living costs. Amounts shown are indicative only. In addition to the tuition fees, there is a Student Services Fee of $8.88 per point, estimated at $2,131.20 for full-time study (240 points). Fees will be confirmed upon completion of enrolment into courses.
