Programme overview
Enter a profession where the demand for graduates is high in New Zealand and overseas and gain an internationally-recognised degree from the only New Zealand University to rank in the top 50 in the world for Education as a subject.
Our refreshed and hands-on programme will equip you with the tools you need to teach in modern classrooms where building strong relationships is vital, diversity is celebrated and digital learning is key.
With greater freedom for you to choose courses from other disciplines across the University, you will develop foundational critical and ethical thinking, communication, and collaborative skills essential for success in the workforce. Courses cover a range of topics, including child development. Our required Waipapa Taumata Rau course focuses on core knowledge relevant to our faculty, the significance of place-based knowledge, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
This is a highly practical degree. Each year of the programme will include an in-school practicum experience where you will have dedicated blocks of time in a range of schools. While on practicum, you'll have the guidance of dedicated teachers, as well as support from university staff.
Over the first two years of the programme you will have some flexibility in the timing of your required teaching experience days. In the third year of the programme, you will complete 80 days of sustained teaching experience where you will establish connections to set you up in your career and gain vital skills to prepare you for the transition into teaching.
You will be taught by academics who are experts in their fields and passionate about supporting the next generation of teachers. Courses are taught through a range of methods including face-to-face lectures, tutorials and workshops. Our tutorials are hands-on and provide a range of practical ideas and resources you can take onto practicum with you.
Bachelor of Education (Teaching) students are eligible for the external TeachNZ Scholarships. Applications open in September each year. Find out more and apply.
Note: Before you begin your teaching journey, there are a few key programme admission conditions you need to complete, so we recommend applying early. You can read about the process on our Info for applicants page.
Programme structure
Our Bachelor of Education (Teaching) programme comprises 360 points of coursework and at least 120 days of practicum. In your first year of study, you are required to complete the faculty’s Waipapa Taumata Rau course.
Designed in two parts, Part One of the degree (Years 1 and 2) will introduce you to key disciplinary knowledge and provide some experience in schools. While there are compulsory core courses, you also have a level of choice to follow areas of interest in other disciplines.
By the end of Part One, you will have developed knowledge in key foundational education disciplines, including education sociology, educational psychology, educational philosophy and Māori education. You will also experience collaborative transdisciplinary learning and develop knowledge and skills of crucial importance to working with the diversity of students in Aotearoa.
Part Two of the degree (year 3) involves a dedicated professionally based programme that focuses strongly on practice, professional identity, learning science, curriculum and pedagogy. While Part One enables you to develop broad knowledge and skills, including experience of school contexts, Part Two is a more intensive preparation for teaching practice.
Most students need to take one General Education course.
Students should also be aware of the University’s Academic English Language Requirement.
Sample programme structure
NB: Enrolment in Year 3 requires the successful completion of all Year 1 and 2 courses and TECANZ-required numeracy and literacy tests.
