Non-invasive Imaging and Modelling of Digestion

About this research study

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a combination of a strong magnetic field and radio frequency waves to obtain images of the inside of the body. MRI is non-invasive, does not expose you to radiation and has minimal risks. In this research, we seek to obtain MR images to capture the movement of the stomach walls (gastric motility) and the resulting breakdown of food within the stomach. These stomach wall movements are coordinated by underlying bioelectrical activity. We also seek to measure these body-surface potentials using electrode arrays placed on the abdomen. It is optional to take part in these electrical recording measurements. Using the MRI images, computer models of the stomach will be created to assess the fluid flow patterns and the breakdown and emptying of foods. We are looking for volunteers to take part in a study of the movements of the stomach after eating.

What's involved?

Participation in the study involves a visit to either the Centre for Advanced MRI (CAMRI) or an Auckland Radiology Group clinic. You will need to fast for at least four hours before the session. The visit will take 2–3 hours, including a maximum of 2.5 hours for MRI scans and preparation. You will be asked to consume a liquid and/or solid meal that will account for your dietary requirements. During the MRI, you will lie still while the machine takes images, with some sequences requiring brief breath holds. Optional bioelectrical activity recordings may be done before and after eating a meal.

Eligibility criteria

  • Age range: 18+
  • Must pass MRI safety checks
  • Have no metallic, magnetic or electric implants in the body
  • Not be pregnant
  • Have had no previous stomach surgeries
  • Must be willing to be informed of incidental findings

What you will receive

Participants will receive a $50 voucher for their time.
