Pacemakers of the gut: Development of next generation stomach pacing techniques
Eligible for funding* | PhD
Similar to the heart, the contractions in the stomach are coordinated by electrical waves. Ordered contraction patterns are needed for the efficient breakdown of the food we eat. A number of debilitating digestive disorders are associated with disordered electrical patterns. This project will develop new electrical pacing techniques to help restore ordered electrical and contraction patterns in the stomach. The project will involve a broad set of skills including instrumentation, experimentation, signal processing, data analysis, and clinical translation. This research will serve as the foundation of an urgently needed therapy for a variety of gut disorders.
Desired skills
- Background in engineering, physics, applied mathematics or equivalent
- Signal processing
- Electronics
- Machine learning
- Data analysis
