Consultation on reasonable accommodations for disability policy and procedures
The Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity (OPVCE) is seeking feedback on draft policy and procedures about reasonable accommodations. The documents will be available on the Policy Hub, and the consultation period will run from Monday 28 April until 5pm, 19 May 2025.
The draft documents aim to clarify and formalise current processes for requesting and making decisions about reasonable accommodations for disability.
The OPVCE values your feedback, both positive and negative, to help us:
• Understand what works or may not work
• Refine the policy and procedures.
Background
University environments, including structures, systems, processes and practices, can interact with a person’s disability in ways that create barriers impeding their work and/or study. Reasonable accommodations are adjustments that remove or mitigate these barriers, supporting disabled people to participate at the University on an equal basis with others.
Many of us need reasonable accommodations at some point in our lives due to temporary or permanent disabilities, illness, or age-related impairments.
Implementing reasonable accommodations often benefits everyone, not just disabled people.
Once approved, the policy and procedures will be supported by detailed Guidelines. These will include background information and case studies.
Disability Confidence training is available via Hono. This assists staff involved with decision making, particularly line managers, in understanding the barriers that disabled people often face.
