Unconscious bias workshop
This three-hour foundational workshop introduces participants to the concept of unconscious bias and explores how these subtle, automatic biases influence decision-making and behaviours, often without awareness.
Through reflective exercises and real-world examples, participants will uncover how unconscious biases operate and identify steps to minimise their impact. This workshop serves as the first module, laying the groundwork for deeper engagement in the Navigating Our Communities workshop.
Participants will leave with the ability to recognise and address unconscious biases in both individual interactions and workplace systems.
Key topics
- Understanding unconscious bias and its impact on behaviour and decision-making
- Identifying common types of unconscious bias:o Confirmation bias (favouring information that supports pre-existing beliefs)
- Attribution bias (interpreting behaviour through stereotypical ideas rather than understanding individual circumstances)
- Halo and horn effects (judging someone entirely based on one positive or negative trait)
- Affinity bias (favouring those who are similar to oneself)
- Exploring the impact of microinequities—small, often unconscious actions that can marginalise others
- Strategies for interrupting unconscious bias and creating more equitable processes
- Preparing for ongoing reflection and learning as part of the DEI journey
Target audience
This workshop is open to academic and professional staff at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland who are committed to self reflection and continuous improvement in fostering inclusive work environments.
It is recommended as the first step in the DEI learning series, with Navigating Our Communities as the second module for deeper intercultural engagement.
