Peer Gynt

Join the Drama 202 students as they stage Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt, a chaotic and confronting dive into an antihero for whom reality and fantasy become blurred.

About the show

Showing 19 - 22 September | Directed by Sara Brodie

This year the DRAMA 202 students are staging Henrik Ibsen's classic play Peer Gynt (1867), using a bold new version by Colin Teevan. This production is directed by renowned New Zealand Arts Laureate Sara Brodie, whose work spans theatre, opera, dance and musical theatre.

Peer Gynt follows the journey of a disreputable antihero whose choices lead him into a chaotic spiral where the line between fantasy and reality becomes increasingly blurred. From New Zealand to Africa and back again, he encounters characters that are mystical, bizarre and often confronting.

Amongst trolls, kings and madmen, Peer shapes and reshapes himself in the face of whatever situation he finds himself in. Thus, we are given a fragmented, shifting picture of Peer's identity, which, as an audience member, will call you to question again and again - Who is Peer Gynt?
