Visiting Scholars Programme

Auckland Law School welcomes visiting scholars from around the world to participate in the research environment and academic life of our law school.

A Visiting Scholar is typically a member of another law faculty, with a clearly defined research agenda, who would like to benefit from the Faculty’s research environment, resources, and expertise.

In exceptional circumstances, a visitor might be an established member of the profession or a doctoral student from another institution.

All visitors require an Auckland Law School faculty member’s agreement to host their visit. Wherever possible, visitors are provided with a workspace, computer and library access. They are also encouraged to take part in the academic life of the Law School including research seminars and public lectures. Visitors are normally in residence at the Law School for a maximum of one semester. Longer visits may be approved in certain circumstances (for example, to facilitate collaborative research with Auckland Law School academic staff).  A person can only take up a visiting scholar position at Auckland Law School once every four years'.

In selecting applicants for the programme, the Faculty considers the applicant’s background, field of interest, scholarly or professional achievement, and research proposal relative to the applicant’s stage in their career. Preference will be given to applicants who have undertaken, or will be undertaking, collaborative research with a member of the Faculty.

Application process
Applications to the Visiting Scholar Programme are accepted at any time of the year. While we welcome applications to the Visiting Scholars Programme, unfortunately not all prospective visitors can be accommodated.

Applications should be submitted at least one month prior to your intended visit and include the following documents:

  1. A completed application form.
  2. A one or two page proposal that outlines the research project, planned collaboration with Auckland Law School academic staff and any other activities you intend to complete during your visit.
  3. A brief curriculum vitae that includes details of your academic employment, qualifications and publications.
  4. A letter or email from an Auckland Law School academic staff member or Research Centre indicating agreement to host your visit. It is the responsibility of the prospective visitor to contact appropriate faculty members and arrange for such sponsorship.

Any queries around the Visiting Scholars Programme can be sent to lawgroupservices@auckland.ac.nz.

Visa information
Most international visitors will require a visa. It is the visitor’s responsibility to obtain an appropriate visa where needed. Applicants should ensure that they submit their application to the Visiting Scholars Programme in plenty of time to obtain a visa prior to their visit. More details on visa processes that may apply to visiting academics from overseas can be found here.

Outside of our Visiting Scholars Programme, researchers who wish to use the resources of the University of Auckland Library, can apply to the library for Associate Membership.
