Iqra Khan pursued a conjoint degree, combining a Bachelor of Laws with a Bachelor of Arts, with her passion for History and Classical Studies shining through her course choices. After graduating from the University of Auckland, she started her career at Simpson Grierson and then transitioned to a specialist at Kiely Thompson Caisley.
I liked the variety of papers you had to complete as part of the conjoint. Getting exposure to so many different aspects of law and history has helped me in identifying the type of person I am, the values I hold and my aspirations.
Iqra’s five years of dedicated learning enriched her life and opened her eyes to the world. Beyond her academic pursuits, Iqra engaged actively in extracurricular activities, serving on executive teams of various clubs. This allowed her to connect with diverse individuals pursuing different degrees. The balance between hard work and a vibrant social life at UoA resonated with her.
After graduating, Iqra secured a position at Simpson Grierson, and later transitioned to Kiely Thompson Caisley, a specialist boutique firm. Her credentials from the University of Auckland proved invaluable in landing these roles. The skills she honed—critical thinking, concise writing, and problem-solving—continue to serve her well in her burgeoning legal career.
Iqra's journey from securing her role was not without challenges. As a hijabi, she faced the unique hurdle of being a minority in the field. Determined to defy stereotypes, she attended networking events, reached out to firms, and earned her first clerkship at the end of her third year of law school.
Iqra's role is a blend of contentious and non-contentious work. Her daily work may include drafting advice, client correspondence, legal research, and preparing for mediations or hearings. The diversity of her work keeps her engaged and provides invaluable exposure.
Iqra's advice to those considering the University of Auckland is clear: "Do it. It's an excellent university, and your degree is valuable wherever you go."
