Awhi Marshall
Awhi is studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and Bachelor of Laws conjoint.
I choose to study at the University of Auckland due to its excellent reputation; anyone I’ve known has studied here has loved it.
I find it extremely valuable how they incorporate a uniquely New Zealand lens into our studies when studying at the University of Auckland. They offer a fundamental underpinning of Te Tiriti and its value in our modern society, the importance of Tikanga Māori and traditional practices and history, especially in Law.
I have been involved in a number of clubs throughout my time studying here; these include SPIES, Rainbow Law, Te Rākau Ture, Rainbow Engineering, AUES, WEN, and NTM. Next year, I'm the Māori Representative for SPIES and the Treasurer for Rainbow Law. Te Rākau Ture provides a beautiful and supportive community to be a part of; it makes existing in a very Pākehā-dominated space easier. Within the ALS itself, being Māori comes with challenges, as does being Māori in any Pākehā-dominated areas, particularly with those who are ignorant of our history, practices, and needs in modern society.
I love the social justice aspect of law, seeing where we can use it as a tool to support marginalised communities rather than further oppression. I hope to be a criminal defence lawyer, particularly for marginalised and low-income defendants.
