When making a big decision, take the time to make sure it is the
right decision that works for you.
Jesse's decision to study at the University of Auckland was driven by his desire to gain experience in the Asia-Pacific region, a part of the world he had yet to explore. He saw New Zealand as an ideal destination due to its cultural similarities with Canada, making the transition smoother. Additionally, the University of Auckland’s reputation, particularly in international tax, was a significant factor, with positive feedback from others about Professor Craig Elliffe playing a crucial role in his decision.
The tight-knit community of tax professionals in New Zealand has been one of the most valuable aspects of Jesse’s programme. He has had opportunities to attend tax-specific events and connect with practitioners in the field, allowing him to establish his presence in a smaller, more accessible jurisdiction compared to larger markets. This has been instrumental in helping him build his network and professional identity.
As an international student, Jesse has been impressed by the responsiveness and willingness of his lecturers to engage in one-on-one discussions, even on short notice. The administrative staff at the University of Auckland have also been supportive, addressing his concerns on a personalised, case-by-case basis—a level of care that Jesse finds rare in academia.
Jesse’s academic achievements are notable, including graduating first in his class during his LLB., which led to scholarships such as the University of Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship and the Auckland Law School Postgraduate Scholarship. These accomplishments have not only facilitated his studies but also enabled him to study in New Zealand, an opportunity he views as a return on his investment in education.
Although still searching for similar volunteer opportunities in Auckland, Jesse has a strong background in inner-city youth outreach in Canada. He is also focused on leveraging the New Zealand Post Study Visa to secure work in his areas of interest—Tax and Trusts. Jesse believes that the specialised nature of tax law, coupled with the close-knit community in New Zealand, will provide promising job prospects.
What Jesse enjoys most about his master’s programme is the freedom to explore and make unconventional arguments, something that often got him in trouble during his LLB studies. He values the opportunity to delve deep into his subjects and push the boundaries of conventional legal thought.
Jesse’s advice for those considering studying at the University of Auckland is to take the time to ensure it’s the right decision for them. The support and opportunities available at the university can be immensely beneficial, but it’s important to be confident in the choice.
