Fahad Shehzad
Fahad is a current student studying a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Bachelor of Arts conjoint degree. He is the co-president of the University of Auckland South Asian Law Students Association.
I thoroughly enjoy my studies because they constantly expand my knowledge, challenging me to think critically and devise creative solutions to complex legal problems. Being immersed in such a diverse community of individuals provides not only valuable learning opportunities but also the chance to forge lifelong friendships.
My aspiration to study law at The University of Auckland was driven by its unparalleled reputation. At Auckland Law School, the rigorous academic environment and diverse community have equipped me with the necessary skills, knowledge and support networks to effectively champion these causes and make meaningful contributions to society.
The LLB programme provides great flexibility. Unlike some other programmes at the University of Auckland, the LLB does not require me to specialise in any particular area of law whilst studying, which allows me to explore and gain exposure to a wide array of legal disciplines through the wide-ranging elective papers offered.
As co-president of the University of Auckland South Asian Law Students Association (SALSA), I have found a meaningful platform to advocate for the minority communities to which I belong, particularly South Asians. My commitment to advocating for meaningful change and creating a more equitable playing field for all is deeply rooted in my past experiences, including leading my community's response to the Christchurch terrorist attacks of 2019. For this effort, I was honoured to receive the Te Manukura - Leadership Award at the New Zealand Youth Awards 2019 from then-Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Peeni Henare. This commitment has continued through, allowing me to now advance this cause through my involvement with SALSA. As an equity-based club, we aspire to empower South Asian law students through valuable networking opportunities, professional development events and exciting cultural and social events.
Each day presents new intellectual challenges and opportunities for growth, fuelling my passion for the law and fostering a dynamic learning environment where I am continually inspired by those around me.
